Two additional train lines came to Millerton, the Poughkeepsie. Trains connected the Village to the Hudson River and the Central New England connected it to points East through Connecticut. In the village, hotels were built to accommodate the travelers and salesmen. Shops opened to sell all the wares that were available in the cities. Churches were built and schools expanded. Millerton had come to life.

The iron works became a paper mill in 1854 and still operates as a paper mill today.  It is the longest continuously operating mill in New York State and one of the largest employers in Columbia County

“Modern” dairy farming came to Ancram in 1875 with the railroads. The railroad provided access to the New York City market and stimulated the growth of dairy farming. Today Ancram real estate maintains its rural character and is dotted with second homes and retirement homes and farms and  estates.
