The Town of Saugerties is in the northeast corner of Ulster County, with the Hudson River, Dutchess and Columbia Counties bordering to the east, Greene County to the North, the Town of Woodstock to the west, the Town Ulster to the south.

According to the U. S. Census for 2000, the town has a total area of 50.3 square miles and a population of 3,544 people, 95% white. The median income for a household is $54,118 and the per capita income for the town is $29,236.

Governor Andros purchased the land on April 27, 1677, for the price of a piece of cloth, a blanket, some coarse fiber, a loaf of bread, and a shirt. The village was incorporated in 1831 as “Ulster,” but it changed its name to “Saugerties” in 1855. In 1710, during the Palatine immigration, over 3,000 Palatine Germans were sent here by the English Crown to manufacture naval stores, tar, and turpentine.

In 1825, a man by the name of Henry Barclay purchased land known as Esopus Creek. After Barclay bought Esopus Creek he soon began to build a dam and a rock cutting project. Between 1826 -1827, Barclay built Ulster Iron Works and a paper mill, thus beginning what became the largest water-powered industry in the world. It was sold in 1851 to the Sheffield Company and resold in 1903 to the Cantine Company which closed the mill in 1975.

In recent years Saugerties has established a reputation as an upscale retirement and second home community. In 1994, Saugerties was the home of the Woodstock ’94 music festival and is just 10 miles east of the town of Woodstock. It is, also, the home of the annual Garlic Festival, the biggest festival in the Mid-Hudson and possibly the biggest food festival on the East coast, with attendance of 20,000 visitors from around the world. Another attraction is HITS, “Horseshows In The Sun,” a national organization for promotion horsemanship.
