Athens is a town in eastern Greene County, bordered on the east by the Hudson River, the south by the Town of Catskill, the west by the Town of Cairo and the north by the Town of Coxsackie.

Athens NY Real Estate is greatly affected by Sleepy Hollow Lake Development which is north of the village of Athens and brings many second home residents and retirees to the historic Town.   The downtown village area  is a developing river front town with new restaurants and rehabilitation of historic buildings.

According to the U. S. Census for 2000, the town has a total area of 28.8square miles and a population of 3,991, 97% white.   The median income for a household in the town was $39,719.   The per capita income for the town was $20,910.

The land was purchased from the natives in 1665. The community was once called “Loonenburgh” (alternately, “Lunenburgh” and “Esperanza.” The village was incorporated in 1805.  The Town of Athens was established on February 25th 1815.

In the late 1830s, Athens had a horse-powered ferry, or “team boat” built for crossing the Hudson.   “This was a single hull vessel of the treadmill type requiring six horses for power.   The treadmills, on either side, were each trod by three horses always facing in the same direction.   To reverse the paddlewheels it was only necessary to stop the horses a minute, and withdraw a drop pin that would reverse the gearing.    Its use as a ferry terminus was diminished after the Rip Van Winkle bridge was built in 1935; the ferry was closed in 1947.

The 1935 completion of the Rip Van Winkle Bridge several miles to the south put an end to the local ferry service across the Hudson, until the summer of 2012 when weekend ferry service resumed.   However, the ferry is portrayed in the 2005 film War of the Worlds, when Martian tripods attack the town, the ferry, and refugees from New York City attempting to flee across the Hudson.

Athens’ layout and architecture have remained essentially the same since its heyday in the late 19th century.   It has more than 300 buildings on national and state historic registers and has the feel of a living museum of American architecture, with examples of many of the predominant styles of the 18th and 19th centuries, including Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate, Stick, Second Empire, Folk Victorian and Queen Anne.

The small and friendly community is made up of an eclectic group of artisans, business people, and families who all enjoy the beauty of this historic area and the essence of small town life.
