Copake Lake Multifamily
Copake is in southern Columbia County. The population was 823 at the 2010 census. This community is named after Copake Lake, a lake by the west town line of the town of Copake. Copake means “snake pond” in the native language. Copake Lake is located about 95 miles (153 km) north of New York City and is an area of second homes. Copake surrounds the water body of Copake Lake, part of the Taghkanic Creek watershed flowing west to the Hudson River.
About two hours from Manhattan, Copake Lake was home to the Mohican Indians before Robert Livingston purchased the land in 1685, according to Wes Keeler’s book on the area, “Copake Lake, Columbia County, New York, Historical Sketches.” According to Keeler, lots were sold at the lake for farms to operate in the 1700s and 1800s. Vacation home builders started to settle there at the beginning of the 1900s.
In the nearby town of Copake, which means “snake pond” in the native language, retail is sparse. A gas station, bank, pharmacy and farmer’s market are still in place. The nearby towns of Hillsdale, Great Barrington, Millerton and Hudson provide antiquing and entertainment. Catamount, a ski resort, is a half-hour drive or less.
