POUGHKEEPSIE NY REAL ESTATE

Poughkeepsie NY Real Estate includes Arlington, Wappinger Falls, Crown Heights, Fairview, New Hamburg, Red Oak Mills, and Spackenkill.    As of the 2010 census it had a population of 32,736.  Poughkeepsie is in the Hudson Valley midway between New York City and Albany, and is part of the Poughkeepsie–Newburgh–Middletown Metropolitan Statistical Area.  The Town of Poughkeepsie is home to Vassar College, one of the nation’s finest liberal arts colleges. Vassar’s Lehman Loeb Art Center, the oldest college art museum in the United States, houses over 18,000 works of art and is free to the public. Our Town is also home to Marist College and Dutchess Community College.

Poughkeepsie NY History

The name is derived from the native term Uppuqui (oo-POO-kee) meaning “lodge-covered”, plus ipis meaning “little water”, plus ing meaning “place”, all of which translates to “the reed-covered lodge by the little water place”, or Uppuqui-ipis-ing.  This later evolved into Apokeepsing, then into Poughkeepsing, and finally Poughkeepsie.

The town was first settled around 1780 and was part of the Schuyler Patent of 1788. The town of Poughkeepsie was established in 1788 as part of a general organization of towns in the county. The hamlet within the town of Poughkeepsie was incorporated as a village in 1799, and as a city in 1854 became the City of Poughkeepsie, which has been referred to as, “The Queen City of the Hudson.”

At least two National Historic Landmarks are located in the town: the Vassar College Observatory and the Main Building of Vassar College.

Although also an industrial center, Poughkeepsie is probably more widely known as the home of Vassar College, founded following the Civil War  for the education of women.   The Cunneen-Hackett Cultural Center is housed in a former home of Matthew Vassar, founder of Vassar College.

The area includes a large IBM campus noted for its ongoing development and manufacturing of IBM mainframes.

The City of Poughkeepsie is completed surrounded by the Town of Poughkeepsie, which is bordered on the west by the Hudson River, to the south by the Town of Wappinger, to the east by the Town of La Grange and to the north by the Town of Hyde Park.

Outside of municipal designations, the City and Town of Poughkeepsie are generally viewed as a single place, and are commonly referred to as Poughkeepsie, with a current combined population of approximately 45,000. Bordering the breathtaking Hudson River in the heart of Dutchess County, the Town of Poughkeepsie is the ideal place to live, work or visit.

The Cunneen-Hackett Cultural Center, built in 1869, is the oldest continually operating entertainment venue in New York State.    The Samuel Morse Historic Site is in Locust Grove, south of the city but within the town, where the inventor of the telegraph resided until his death in 1870.   The Poughkeepsie Journal is the oldest newspaper in New York State and the third oldest in the country.

The same Vassar family that funded Vassar College provided the funds for Poughkeepsie’s first full hospital.  Vassar Brothers Hospital opened in 1887, and admitted 80 patients in its first year. The name was changed in 2002 to Vassar Brothers Medical Center.  Saint Francis Hospital was founded in 1914, by the Franciscan Sisters.

Poughkeepsie is connected with the western part of the state by the Mid-Hudson Bridge, a major thoroughfare built in 1930 that carries U.S. Route 44 (concurrent with State Route 55).     The Poughkeepsie Bridge, a former railroad bridge, serves as a public walkway, over the Hudson River.
