Catamount ski area is located on the border of Massachusetts and New York and only about a 15-mile ride from the Northwest Connecticut border. The Town of Hillsdale is located in the eastern portion of Columbia County bordering the western Massachusetts towns of Alford and Egremont. The Town is sparsely populated, but the Hamlet has recently implemented a town sewage system. Many residents of the Town of Copake live at Hillsdale postal addresses, and are socially and physically a part of Hillsdale

The hills and dales prominent throughout the Town, lead to  the name Hillsdale. They range from just under 700 feet above sea level to 1,673 feet in elevation on White’s Hill. The Town has large areas of rocky slopes, with a thin soil mantle over bedrock and poor permeability.

In addition to the mountains, there are three main valleys in the Town. Hillsdale’s open space, rural character, and scenic views are important natural resources that attract people to the area. Because of its proximity to the Taconic Parkway and the Berkshires it has become a popular second home destination for people from the New York City Metropolitan area.

The largest natural resource other than forests (which cover 70 % of Hillsdale) is agricultural land. Of the Town’s 48.3 square miles (30,912 acres), approximately twenty percent of the land (6,200 acres) remains in agriculture. Twenty years ago, thirty percent of the land was considered to be in agricultural use.

About 10 years ago with the help of New York State the unique and spacious Roeliff Jansen Park, managed by the Town of Hillsdale, was created. The park is almost completely volunteer-run.

Divided down the middle by Route 22, the park’s eastern half offers about 150 public acres of mowed trails through rolling fields of alfalfa, sheltering barns, stunning views, the home of Hillsdale’s groundbreaking summer nature program for kids, playground equipment and exercise stations, and a weekly farmers market from June to October that is second to none.

While the initial steering committee of Hillsdale and Copake residents were assigned the task of creating a plan for Roe Jan Park, another town committee, Historic Hillsdale, led the designation of Hillsdale as an Historic District, now listed on the New York State and National Registers. Federal and state tax credits available to owners of historic, commercial, office, industrial or rental residential buildings have been widely promoted. It’s obvious to all that more than a few buildings in the district have been fully restored or are getting some kind of makeover.

Meanwhile, the Town’s Hamlet Committee envisioned a Hamlet Design and Development Plan that was adopted by the Town Board in early 2011. “The execution of that plan is still in its infancy,” said Art Baer, Hillsdale Town Supervisor. “But having a plan is everything. It doesn’t mean that the plan won’t change or get better or encounter challenges. But it’s where we start.”

Others dream that Hillsdale’s progress will inspire the purchase and restoration of the old Roe Jan School building, a mile south from the town’s only traffic light. “There isn’t a soul who doesn’t want the best for that magnificent structure,” said Peter Cipkowski. “Its restoration, in the right hands, would be gigantic.”
