Schoharie County is a predominantly rural county, its southern portion is within the Catskill Mountains, the land rising steeply in both directions from the Schoharie Creek. In contrast, the northern part of the county is predominately small hills and valleys. Most of Schoharie County lies within the Mohawk Watershed which comprises about one-quarter of the larger Hudson River Basin. Sections of the Mohawk River also serve as the New York State Barge (Erie) Canal. Given the beautiful rural scenary, Schoharie attracts second home owners and retirees seduced by its beautiful scenary and reasonable costs. Compared with areas closer to New York and Albany, Schoharie County is a bargain and many affordable homes in beautiful settings are available. Even estate properties which if closer to major population center would command high prices are more reasonbly priced in Schoharie County.
Schoharie has a wealth of fishing spots. The best fishing location is the Cobleskill Reservoir, which consists of three ponds. Schoharie Reservoir another large body of water suited to fishing and is one of the local fishing spots worth checking out. The Schoharie Reservoir is full of Brown trout, rainbow trout, brook trout, largemouth and smallmouth bass. The Schoharie reservoir drains into the Schoharie Creek, one of the famous trout fishing Catskill creeks. This creek is constantly being stocked with rainbow and brown trout. It is also a great local fishing spot for bass and walleye (which are found in the lower end of the creek before it empties into the Hudson River). The Vlaie – This pond is the best fishing location for pickerel, smallmouth and largemouth bass, perch and one of my favorite eating fish – the crappie. Ostego lake is populated with lake trout, brown trout, Atlantic salmon, large and small mouth black bass, rock bass, sunfish, chain pickerel, yellow perch, carp and bullhead. If you want the salmon or lake trout you have to go out in a boat and fish deep.
