Sleepy Hollow Lakefront Lot

Coxsackie NY real estate is in eastern Greene County, with the Hamlets of Climax and Earlton. It is bordered to the north by the Town of New Baltimore, to the east by the Hudson River. To the south by the Towns of Athens and Cairo and to the west by the Town of Greenville.

According to the U. S. Census for 2000, the town has a total area of 38.4square miles and a population of 8,884, 92% white. The median income for a household in the town was $37,830. The per capita income for the town was $16,830.

The settlement of Coxsackie began around 1652 as part of the development of New Netherlands. The area became a district in 1772, and the Town of Coxsackie was founded in 1788. One of the first settlers here was Pieter Bronck, of the same family for which The Bronx is named. In 1663, he built the Pieter Bronck House in West Coxsackie (open as a museum). The nearby family burial ground includes a separate plot with marked graves for slaves of the family.

The Reed Street Historic District in the Village of Coxsackie includes thirty-two buildings. Definitely a mercantile section, the district is characterized by two and three-story, mid-nineteenth century brick commercial buildings.  Particularly interesting are late nineteenth century cast-iron columns added to some storefronts.

The earliest homes were built in what is now West Coxsackie. Many stone houses are still standing. Growth in the 1800’s utilized the Hudson River. Winter ice harvesting, brick making, ship building, metal foundries, and river transportation were the dominant industries.
